In social development theory, the idea that civic engagement and participation can directly contribute to better governance and to overall societal development has been developed over the past two decades. This area focuses on researching the effects of civil participation in connection to the following topics: (a) the manner in which civil awareness is built; (b) the emergence and strengthening of participative practices; and (c) to strengthening responsible and accountable institutions.
The results from this field of research have significant implications on the creation of programmes the purpose of which is to improve responsibility and efficiency of national institutions before the citizens.
